‘Held Time’ at Llandaff Cathedral

‘Held Time’ at Llandaff Cathedral

Ever since finishing my MA at Cardiff School of Art and Design, just around the corner from Llandaff Cathedral, I had imagined that my new sculptural pieces would be suited to a space such as this.

I am drawn to the craftsmanship of the Cathedral’s stonework, particularly the repeated chevrons and geometric patterns that follow the curves of the architecture. I think about each mark being made by hand, creating a rhythm that I recognise in my own work through carved surfaces and subtle textures. The muted, pared-back tones of my ceramics sit naturally alongside the stonework, creating a quiet and enduring connection between the hand, the material and the act of making.

I see the installation as a composition of forms, shapes and spaces, much like a three-dimensional still life. And, like a still life painting, these arrangements create a moment to pause. This feels particularly appropriate within a cathedral — a sacred space that naturally invites reflection and contemplation.

It is a privilege to have my work displayed to the public in such a space. The cathedral is open every day. For more information please visit Llandaff Cathedral.
