Chloe is an artist specialising in hand-thrown pieces, with a focus on the vessel form, texture and surface decoration. She recently graduated with Distinction in her Masters in Ceramics from Cardiff School of Art and Design, where she studied under the renowned tutor and artist, Claire Curneen. Previously she had worked as a functional potter for 10 years, building up a client base of individuals and restaurants.
Chloe explores the beauty in both the process of creation and the finished piece, where the quiet labour and unique character of the materials are evident in every object, with textures and details that emerge and shift with changing light. By stripping away function and colour to focus on form, surface and texture, she creates pieces that evoke a sense of stillness, much like a still life painting, a reflection of the natural world and our place in it. Through familiar forms (like a vessel), and surface texture, she aims to create a space for contemplation and connection, inviting the viewer to pause and appreciate the beauty in the present moment.
Her vessels are made using stoneware clay, that start off on the potter’s wheel, and are then altered to allow further manipulation of the clay, and to create new forms. The transformation continues through mark-making, using a variety of techniques to create texture, followed by the application of slips in a painterly manner, to infuse each piece with a natural and serene quality. Some of the pieces are burnished and polished to achieve a particular sheen, but her works are left unglazed to preserve the integrity and tactility of the material.
The wall postcards, made with different types of stoneware clay, each carry a unique design, capturing fleeting moments of time, with textures that evoke the essence of the natural world. Each piece is a testament to the continuity of her process, where one creation leads to another, reflecting a journey of exploration, connection and play.
